PULSE BURST RADAR – ANTENNAS

Dielectric Rod and Horn Antennas for PULSAR® Model Rx5

Horn Antennas

Pulse burst radar horn antennas are a robust and electromagnetically efficient design that offers the highest level of performance in typical through-air radar applications. Ideally the 6" (150 mm) horn antenna should be used to ensure the best possible performance in all operational conditions. Since that isn’t practical for all installations, a 4” horn is available as well as dielectric rods.

Dielectric Rod Antennas:

For a large number of pulse burst radar installations where an existing process connection will not accommodate a horn antenna, Magnetrol offers a dielectric rod antenna.  Typically constructed of 316SS and TFE or polypropylene, additional materials are also available.

Operating Principle

The Pulsar® radar transmitter is based on pulse burst radar technology together with equivalent time sampling circuitry. Short bursts of 5.8 or 6.3 GHz microwave energy are emitted and subsequently reflected from the liquid level surface. Distance is calculated by the equation D = Transit time (round-trip)/2. Liquid level is then calculated by applying the tank height value.

Applications
  • PULSAR® Model R95 Pulse Burst Radar level transmitters are offered with a wide selection of heavy-duty dielectric rod and horn antennas.

Features
  • Antenna designs to +400° F (+200° C),
    750 psig (51.7 bar)
  • Range up to 65 feet (20 meters)
  • Will reliably track extremely rapid rate of change up to 180 inches (4,5 m)/minute
  • Quick connect/disconnect antenna coupling allows vessel to remain sealed (patent pending)
  • Extremely low output at antenna: <.01 mW (avg),
<2 mW (max); hundreds of times less than a cell phone
  • Safety Integrity Level (SIL) value of 1 / SFF = 73.7%
  Options
  • Teflon® or polypropylene dielectric rod configuration
  • Materials of construction: 316/316L stainless steel, Hastelloy C, Monel, all-polypropylene wetted surfaces (including flange connections)
  • Process Connection: NPT ANSI flange, DIN flange, or Triclover® type
  • Antenna nozzle extensions
  • 4" or 6" horn configuration
  • ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3 construction
